Wide-angle camera technology for automotive applications: a review

چکیده
The development of electronic vision systems for the automotivemarket is a strongly growing field, driven in particular by customer demand to increase the safety of vehicles both for drivers and for other road users, including vulnerable road users (VRUs), such as pedestrians. Customer demand is matched by legislative developments in a number of key automotive markets; for example Europe, Japan and the US are in the process of introducing legislation to aid in the prevention of fatalities to VRUs, with emphasis on the use of vision systems. The authors discuss some of the factors that motivate the use of wide-angle and fish-eye camera technologies in vehicles. The authors describe the benefits of using wide-angle lens camera systems to display areas of a vehicle’s surroundings that the driver would, otherwise, be unaware of (i.e. a vehicle’s blind-zones). However, although wideangle optics provide greater fields of view, they also introduce undesirable effects, such as radial distortion, tangential distortion and uneven illumination. These distortions have the potential tomake objects difficult for the vehicle driver to recognise and, thus, potentially have a greater risk of accident. The authors describe some of the methods that can be employed to remove these unwanted effects, and digitally convert the distorted image to the ideal and intuitive rectilinear pin-hole model.

Comparison of Calibration Algorithms for a Low-Resolution, Wide Angle, 3D Camera
This Master thesis deals with the calibration of the optics of a novel time-of-flight range camera intended for use in automotive applications. The camera is different from standard cameras in that it can yield both regular intensity images and depth maps, but also in that its resolution is less than a tenth of a standard camera. The thesis treats the topics of feature detection in low resoluti...
متن کاملCamera Pose Estimation in Unknown Environments using a Sequence of Wide-Baseline Monocular Images
In this paper, a feature-based technique for the camera pose estimation in a sequence of wide-baseline images has been proposed. Camera pose estimation is an important issue in many computer vision and robotics applications, such as, augmented reality and visual SLAM. The proposed method can track captured images taken by hand-held camera in room-sized workspaces with maximum scene depth of 3-4...

متن کاملAutomatic calibration of fish-eye cameras from automotive video sequences
A technique for calibrating a lens in the automotive environment to compensate for radial distortion introduced by wide-angle or fish-eye lenses, without the need for a dedicated calibration environment, is proposed. At present, car manufacturers are endeavouring to introduce systems that provide the driver with views of the car’s surroundings that are not directly visible (blind zones). To ach...
متن کاملOnline Calibration of Camera Roll Angle
Modern day cars are often equipped with a vision system that collects information about the car and its surroundings. Camera calibration is extremely important in order to maintain high accuracy in an automotive safety applications. The cameras are calibrated offline in the factory, however the mounting of the camera may change slowly over time. If the angles of the actual mounting of the camer...
